CMS Makes More Nursing Home Performance, Ownership Data Public in Latest Transparency Push
By Amy Stulick
On June 28, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) started publishing the names of affiliated nursing home owners and aggregate data on staffing, inspections, and quality metrics for ownership groups on the Nursing Home Care Compare website. The data also includes the number of Special Focus Facilities, select enforcement remedies, COVID-19 vaccination rates, and a for-profit and not-for-profit breakdown of facilities. The agency said in a memo that this will “fulfill the White House Fact Sheet goal to ‘track and identify owners and operators across states to highlight previous problems with promoting resident health and safety.’ We welcome feedback from users and stakeholders on recommendations for how to improve the utility of the data posted.” The public can use Care Compare to evaluate the quality of nursing homes with common ownership or operation, while state agencies and CMS can use the data to learn more about prospective owners and operators before certifying a new nursing home or when reviewing change of ownership requests.
